Mission & Values
Mission
To provide financial and practical support to ‘Bwindi Orphanage Development
Centre’ (BODEC) and the surrounding community, helping them with projects
that will enable them to become a self-sustaining community free from poverty,
and in particular to help them support the vulnerable and orphaned children
of the district.
Values
We aim to work in partnership with people disadvantaged by poverty to enable
them to undertake their own projects and to provide sustainable support
to the community.
We are an independent organisation with no religious or political affiliations.
We aim to be aware of and sensitive to local culture, values and issues.
HIV/AIDS
We hope to support educational projects that aim to reduce infection rates
and prevalence of HIV/AIDS in the region. Uganda was one of the first countries
to be infected by the virus, with devastating effects on the population.
A massive public health programme involving open discussion of risks and
the promotion of ‘ABC’ (Abstinence, Be faithful, use a Condom)
has led to increased awareness and a reduction in infection rates. However
large amounts of US funding is now available, a considerable proportion
of which is channelled through faith-based groups that place conditions
on the funding that can restrict open discussion of sexual health, almost
certainly leading to increased infection rates.
(see www.avert.org/aidsuganda.htm)
We will never knowingly be involved with projects influenced by these organisations,
and will do our best to ensure that any programme supported by our group
discusses the use of condoms and safer sexual practices as well as abstinence
and fidelity.
