Projects

The ‘Bwindi Orphans Development Centre’ Committee have innovative, achievable and exciting proposals, including many that will enable the orphanage to become self sufficient and no longer rely on charitable donations. We are aiming to help them achieve the following amounts;

Theatre programme
£2,800 to pay for new costumes and instruments to enhance the children’s dance and musical skills and enable them to perform cultural dance exhibitions.

Gallery shop
£3,500 to pay for local crafts and artists work for their gallery shop selling quality items to tourists, generating an income and creating employment.

Educational workshops
£2,000 to finance educational workshops and increase awareness across the Kanungu district, covering topics such as HIV/AIDs, STD's (sexually transmitted diseases), STI's (sexually transmitted infections) and adolescence.

Agricultural projects
£3,000 to establish demonstration gardens which will act as models to the community including vegetable and flower gardens as well as income generating poultry and bee keeping projects.

Orphanage centre
£27,000 to build a residential provision for double orphans and for the children who have HIV and AIDS, to enable them to receive health care and attend classes – currently all of the children at the orphanage are fostered with families over a wide spread area of countryside, some are too weak to walk to school.

Secondary school
£284,000 to complete the local secondary school to educate local children - currently they have to walk 30 km each way to the closest school unless they have a sponsor to pay boarding fees. This figure includes 5 years’ running costs.

Tourist lodge
£60,000 to build a tourist lodge for people trekking gorillas, bird watching and attending drumming and African art breaks. This will provide an income to sustain the orphanage and provide training and employment opportunities.

Solar power project
Ignatius, the orphanage director mentioned that they will soon have the chance to connect to the internet (using the computers donated in May) as the region’s communications are being improved – currently staff must travel to a town several hours away to access email and use the internet. The orphanage would need a reliable power supply and we contacted Computers for Africa, who were able to recommend a company based in Kampala. We have contacted the company and put them in touch with the orphanage, and are awaiting quotes.

Tree planting project
Tree planting project to act as a source of sustainable locally available materials to be used in crafts and wood carvings.

BODEC Website
We have made a website for Bwindi Orphans Development Center to provide information to supporters and visitors, bwindiorphanage.googlepages.com . We currently use a free service to keep costs down.

Staff salaries
£11,500 to provide staff salaries per year.

Sponsor programme
We are supporting the sponsorship programme by publicising the scheme, encouraging new sponsors and by assisting in communications between sponsors and the orphanage, which is geographically very remote (a 5 hour drive to the nearest town and internet access).
